Sabo Asakura
A moment to unwind in the city.
Near Nishi-Sugamo Station, Sabo Asakura serves rich baked cheesecake, iced coffee poured over coffee-ice cubes, and mild curry sets in a nostalgic kissaten interior.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Dense and substantial enough to resist the fork, the cheesecake at Sabo Asakura is reason enough to seek out this neighborhood cafe. It is a classic baked version with no needless embellishment, drawing on the straightforward richness of dairy without turning cloying. Many visitors linger over a slice during the afternoon, and it is common to see regulars picking up whole portions or slices to take home.
Alongside the cake, the iced coffee arrives with an inventive touch: often brought in a small ceramic carafe resembling a tokkuri sake server, it is poured into a glass containing cubes frozen from brewed coffee itself. Even as the ice melts over conversation, the drink never thins out, preserving its deep roasted flavor to the final drop. For a hot cup, guests can choose between dark and light roasts, loose-leaf black teas, or pure grape juice—a traditional kissaten staple.
When hunger calls for more than sweets, the curry set delivers reliable comfort. Brought to the table in an old-fashioned gravy boat, the sauce is mild and approachable, finished with a choice of drink. The morning hours feature lightly toasted bread sets, while the dessert list broadens into matcha shiratama, sweet potato parfaits, and cake parfaits across the afternoon.
Tucked into the back of a building steps from Nishi-Sugamo Station, the compact cafe greets guests with an ornate ceiling and characterful vintage furnishings. Seating spans counter stools and small tables, and because smoking is permitted throughout, it functions as a regular retreat for neighborhood smokers. Those sensitive to tobacco may prefer ordering cake to go, but sitting amid the Showa-era kissaten atmosphere with house-made sweets and careful coffee is a rare pleasure. Please note that payment is cash only, so it is wise to prepare yen before stepping inside.
